Apple CEO Tim Cook says expect future Siri speech recognition update to be ‘profound’

Siri speech recognition and text-to-speech features will see dramatic improvements.......

Apple CEO Tim Cook has revealed the company has big plans for its intelligent voice recognition service Siri, some of which will be announced in the coming months.

Tim Cook revealed the news on stage during The Wall Street Journal’s D: All Things Digital conference.

He told Kara Swisher and Walt Mossberg that Siri has shown Apple that its customers want to relate to the device using their voice. He added that it’s Siri’s ability to contextualize and understand the information people ask for that makes it such a “powerful” feature. Cook maintained that Siri is one of the most popular features on the iPhone 4S but said Apple is still working hard to make it better. “Customers love it,” he said, “[b]ut there’s more that it can do and we have a lot of people working on this. And I think you will be really pleased with some of the things you see over the coming months on this. We have some cool ideas about what Siri can do. We have a lot going on on this.” So what does Apple have in store for Siri? We won’t know for sure until Apple spills the beans (most likely during its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June), however Cook told the audience to expect something “profound.”   “This is something that people dreamed of for years, I think,” he said, “and it is here. Yes, it can be broader and so forth, but we see unbelievable potential here.”
