A new app for your iPhone, iTouch or iPad pays you to watch television.
It’s called Viggle and we found Christy Watts of Monroeville already reaping the rewards.
“They are real life rewards, like useful gift cards,” Watts said.
Since March, Watts has earned five Starbucks gift cards just by watching TV.
Here’s how it works: you download the Viggle app and activate it whenever you watch TV. It then identifies the show through voice recognition.
Once you are checked in, you earn points for watching TV shows, even ones you recorded on your DVR, and for watching movie trailers.
Last week, Watts earned 1,500 bonus points for watching a special episode of ‘Ellen’.
Along the way, she’s discovered new shows because she received bonus points for watching them.
“‘America’s Got Talent’ just started and I’ve never seen it before, and it’s not bad,” she said.
Once you accumulate enough points, you can redeem them for coupons, gift cards or merchandise.
Advertisers benefit because people see their commercials. They are able to get information from Viggle so they can target ads at people who are likely to buy their products.
Watts has 11,000 points now and she’s saving up those rewards to get a big prize worth 375,000 points.
“I think maybe by Christmas I could have enough for a Kindle,” Watts said.
An Android version of the app is in the works.
A similar app called Connectv comes out next month. All the major television networks have invested in it.
