WE SUSPECT that iPhone 4 loyalists will experience a certain amount of heartburn when they see the new Samsung Galaxy S III, an Android 4.0, that not only has features that gives more bang for the buck for buyers but also gives them a product whose looks can kill.
The Galaxy S III is a pint-sized powerhouse, 136.6mm in length, 70.6mm in width and 8.6mm in thickness, and yet it is a feature-rich, next-generation phone that is more pocket portable computer than a phone. Don’t believe us? Read on.
How about a phone whose camera recognizes faces of people who are in your contact list? The phone has an 8-megapixel camera at the rear and a 1.9-megapixel webcam that enables face recognition and displays the contact’s information when scrolled over. Smart Stay also allows automatic sharing of pictures if you want and will also tag your friends and family for Facebook pictures, without having to exit from the phone’s camera app. For social networking junkies, this is the best news ever. And the phone is so smart it notices it whenever you look at it and makes sure screen resolution remains constant whenever there is eye contact!
The camera app also has other bonuses. It allows recording video in Full HD (1080p) and 720p through its front-facing camera. The new Burst Shot mode allows you to grab as many as 20 pictures in quick succession and saves you the trouble of searching for the best picture by doing the selection on its own!
If you thought Apple’s Siri was as clever as it could get, think again. Samsung’s S Voice not only understands natural phrases but only responds to the original user’s voice, setting at rest concerns about security. The voice recognition software is also integrated into its embedded applications such as the camera so that instead of searching for keys to get that critical “photo op”, all you have to do is order it to take the picture! How cool is that? The new Samsung’s Direct Call feature makes it easier to be in touch at all times with those on your contact list. All you have to do is put the phone to your ear and it automatically dials the person in your contact list who has called, texted or communicated in any way with you.
The GS III features the 1.4 GHz Exynos 4 Quad chip on board processor and a hefty 1GB RAM helps you zip through the multiple tasks on your list.
The phone comes in very attractive Pebble Blue and Marble and has a natty 4.8-inch HD Super AMOLED touch screen, with a HD resolution at 1280 x 720 with a 306 PPI, which is much better eye candy than the iPhone’s Retina display.
We are not sure how the battery life will play out on the phone considering its large sized display, which can demolish the most self-respecting battery. But that is a small price to pay for the other plus points on this phone. —prashant.vadgaonkar@hotmail.com
